Connections Plus Program
Connections Plus Spotlight
Connections Plus is an after school mentoring program for young men and boys. The focus is three fold. To help these young people develop life skills that will be useful now and in the future. These life skills include various outdoor activities, an array of wood working and crafts, team building and athletic endeavors. Second point of emphasis is to help these young men develop social skills. Providing them opportunities to develop the skills to become contributing members of a society. The third point of emphasis is Christ formation. We endeavor to see these young men come to understand the Christian and most importantly to live the Christian faith. A dedicated time of Bible study is provided for at every session, with teaching, Q and A time, prayer and general reflection. The pace is accordance with the spiritual maturity level of the group.
The benefits these young men receive are many. First of all, they receive male mentorship, which many of these young people are lacking. Secondly, they can engage in a vast array of activities that appeal to young men and boys in a very safe and secure environment. Thirdly, they are exposed to the gospel of Jesus Christ, not just in word, but in real life practical situations. All of this is accomplished is a very safe and secure environment.
This program has contributed to the expansion of the Kingdom in many ways. However, the true impact of these programs really cannot be measured until later on in these young men’s lives. We have seen young men get control of their tempers, learn to get along with their peers and many come to a greater understanding of the word of God and how to practically live it out in their lives.
Connections Plus History
Connections Plus Curriculum
We work with the local church, Maranatha Church, to develop and deliver this program. This program generally works with middle school age kids and young high school students. This is a custom curriculum that is tailored to the needs of the students. This program meets on Tuesday evenings during the school year (September to May), between 3:00pm and 5:00pm.
For example, if one of the young men needs a little help with his math, or maybe needs some self-care, we will take the time to give him the help he needs while we will continue with the other students. We try to use the outdoor grounds as much as possible for our programming, but when the weather gets bad, we move into the Woodshop or Activity Center to continue to teach life skills.
